This program began with a track from Camera Obscura's terrific new disc; there's an organ riff (at least, I think it's an organ) that brought to mind the tone pedal effect from George Harrison's guitar on the Beatles track that followed. From there we had a British Invasion-flavored tune from Mojave 3 into an old Troggs number as recently reimagined by Dave Sitek, and then a big smash by the Rascals from that decade was followed by some turn-of-the-century sunshiney pop from the Orange Peels. Then it was the Singles' take on the British Invasion into an old Gene Clark tune by the Byrds, which brought the Byrds-like track from Bruce Springsteen's latest to finish up.

Sometimes it only takes a single line from a song to bring up a connection to another one; this section began with an Iggy Pop track that has a great refrain (Don't we all wish that life could be Swedish magazines?), and it came to mind after hearing the advance track from Sonic Youth's upcoming disc that features Kim Gordon singng "I wish I could be, music on a tree." From there it was all about guitars and energy with Ash leading to a catchy new one from It Hugs Back and on to Four Volts building to a satisfying sonic roar. The guitars kept coming with Buffalo Tom, and then it was a pair from the late '70s by Buzzcocks and Squeeze that have always worked well back to back. Finally, a favorite by Euro-Trash GIrl from a few years back led to an impatiently exhortative Paul Weller.

The impressively titled track by the Caesars that opened this set shared a similar feel to the late '60s gem from the Turtles that followed, and then it was brand new music from Super Furry Animals that was also coming from the same place. The title of that one conjured up a classic instrumental from the Beach Boys, which was followed by another insrtrumental (with some additional choral singing) from Burt Bacharach before the travel-inspired portion of the set ended with Kevin Tihista's Red Terror. From there it was an idiosyncratic pop tune from White Whale, a new one from Richard Swift with Harry Nilsson overtones and Neko Case with her heartfelt cover of a Nilsson tune from her new disc.

 The tone of despair that punctuates tthe Joy Division track at the start of this final section never really lifted right through the end with Elliott Smith's nihilistic little ditty. In between were Arcade Fire looking into the void, Great Northern with a warning about the wisdom of crowds, Radiohead anticipating the inevitable decline of a relationship, Love having reached that point and feeling utterly lost, the Shins feeling hemmed in and Irving pretty much traveling down the same path as Elliott Smith.

This opener was one of those amazing Leonard Cohen songs that he wrote a long time ago, and it still sounds real good in the version heard here from his new live collection. The succor provided by the "sisters of mercy" is echoed in the John Cale tune that followed, but then the atmosphere became more poisonous in the tracks from Neko Case and Tarnation. From there it was Clem Snide with a song that sounds like a love song but is actually about ensuring that a relationship stays broken, and then it was Josh Ritter accepting that reality and Simon & Garfunkel seemingly sure that the time had come to call it quits—at least until the tune's final line.

A bit of social commentary from Super Furry Animals new disc that uses Neil Diamond to make a point led to David Bowie with a plea for tomorrow and Ian Hunter scolding the passive herds. From there it was Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros surveying the world in the early years of the 21st century followed by Bob Dylan pretty much doing the same in the 1960s. Then Beck trying to get a handle on his present situation gave way to Joe Henry using a (fictional) chance encounter with Willie Mays in a Home Depot as a jumping-off point for a rumination on American society c. 2007.

After leading off the last set with that new Furries tune I couldn't resist playing one from Neil himself, and then it was She & Him with some good advice for the Solitary Man. That led to Camera Obscura from their brand new disc, which is full of splendidly sad yet catchy tunes and has become my favorite of the moment. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band followed with a bright rocker from their last one that flowed nicely into a classic three-minute pop song full of yearning from the Raspberries, which then brought on Fountains of Wayne with a synth-soaked tale of a guy who gets a tattoo to impress a girl (yeah, like that ever works). Holding on to the synths were the Apples in Stereo sounding an awful lot like the Electric Light Orchestra, and then it was Stereolab incorporating a touch of ELO as well to close it out.

Music from a new trio calling themselves Peggy Sue conjured up an old Maria Muldaur tune, which then segued nicely into one from Ramblin' Jack Elliott's latest disc. Then it was the Grateful Dead covering Hank Williams from a long time ago and Cat Power with a nice take on a Janis Joplin number from last year's disc. A profoundly despondent Toussaint McCall gave way to Tindersticks with a vivid metaphor for the pain of love, and then it was a magnificently gloomy Jesus and Mary Chain cover by the Postmarks leading to Julee Cruise's etherial vocals accompanying Angelo Badalamenti's title track for Twin Peaks.

A track from the brand new Art Brut disc sent this program down an alcohol-filled path that included a favorite on the subject from the Kinks followed by one with a different point of view by the Magnetic Fields. From there it was Loretta Lynn laying down some ground rules into Spike Jones with his distinctive approach to making music. Don Ho's celebration of bubbly wine led to Floyd Dixon enjoying himself down at the tavern, and then it was a little personal history from Roger Miller followed by more of the same from Townes Van Zandt. A mid-'70s tune from Loudon Wainwright III accurately reflects what much of that decade felt like to me, and then it was the double punch of Tom Waits and the Replacements on the damage that seems to accompany alcohol wherever it goes, albeit more humorously in the first instance than in the second.

This section opened with one more on catching a buzz from Muddy Waters leading to Bunny Wailer on the guy who offers the evil weed for consumption. Another slice of reggae from Toots and the Maytals covering John Denver was next, and then it was a traditional calypso tune by Harry Belafonte from early on his career that flowed nicely into some classic bossa nova from Antonio Carlos Jobim with Astrud Gilberto on vocals. A wistful cover by Sounds Orchestral of a Vince Guaraldi instrumental was followed by the latest from Yo La Tengo that brought to mind a high point from my favorite Brian Eno disc, and then it was a contemplative Marble Tea to finish up.

The upcoming Bob Dylan album has me listening to his music even more than usual right now, so after a lighthearted number from the mid-'60s it was Randy Newman following with another one that features headgear. The piano on that one conjured up Professor Longhair, which fed quite nicely into the Bonzo Dog Band tune that many years on transformed into the name of a band. Camera Obscura followed with the title track from their wonderful new disc; a musical source they like to mine is the girl group/solo-female-singer sound of the '60s, which was beautifully represented by the Diane Dane character in That Thing You Do!. That movie is set in the Spring/Summer of 1964, which is when Terry Stafford had his big hit, and then it was one with a similar tension to its sound from Neko Case.

As this is Lucky Dog Radio, it seemed appropriate to welcome the latest canine to call the White House home with a couple of tunes about boys and their dogs from the Beatles and Harry Nilsson. You can hear the influence of both on many of the tunes from Richard Swift's latest disc, and from there it was a keyboard-driven track by the King of France leading to a Rilo Kiley song that has a '50s "Sock Hop" feel, as does the track from Mark Pickerel and his Praying Hands that followed. The Five Satins big hit from that decade led to the J. Geils Band with their spirited take on an old R&B number from the Marvelows, and then to wrap it up was the man who indirectly provided the Obama's new pooch with a name.
